TEACHING [MEMORY XIV]
After SLC, there was almost two months gap. During those gaps, most of my friends joined bridge course but I started teaching in the school where I studied. I started teaching to the per-primary students especially to nursery. My father insisted me to teach in the school so that I can learn something and I have learned so many things while teaching.
While teaching, there was one kid named Diana who used to cry a lot. All students were habitual to schools after few days but Diana was continuously crying. She was continuously crying by telling that she wanted to go with her mom. She was not convinced when we used to convince. We used to go out with her, play with her but she used to cry continuously. After Dashain and Tihar, she was happy in the school. We were shocked as well as happy.
Not only this, there was another incident. There was one kid who happens to be my cousin. She was my sanima's daughter. She was innocent and still innocent. She used to speak less. When her friends used to slap her or hit her, she used to remain silent. She never complained. But one day, when she was playing, she flew down. Her friend intensely pushed her from slide and she was crying. She didn't speak and was hurt in her forehead and head. Later, we told her mother about the incident and thank god she understood us. Otherwise, if other parents were there, they could have scolded us.
While teaching the students, I slowly knew about the teaching skills. Most of the students didn't know to write. So, we gave them to match the figure with the alphabets. All of the students did this activity. Students who did not know how to write, they knew the alphabets with the help of pictures. More than that, when we made match the pictures with alphabets in the white board, most of thee students were interested to do the activities.
After teaching in the school, I knew that everything in the brain is plastic; it is changeable, mold able. No one’s brains are changing more than children’s. Every experience creates new neural pathways and connects neurons to one another, shaping our personality and the way to perceive or respond to external stimuli. There are some areas of personality that are unchangeable, but for the most part, it’s plastic.
That child who comes into your class afraid that kid who is just plain angry because his mom left; that little girl who believes no one loves her because daddy said so — this is where teachers come in. So, we need to know the psychology of the children: what they need and what they think. According to their psychology, we need to teach them because we cannot force them to write at the initial age. They have come from home and they need love. So, we should made them play in the class and make familiar with the school which helps them to study. Moreover, we need to teach them with politely and convince them that they can do and write. We need to build their confident.
